A tire blowout caused an 18-wheeler wreck on Interstate 10 in Jefferson County Sunday, May 6.

According to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the 18-wheeler was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10, and one of the passenger-side tires blew out on the vehicle causing the driver to veer to the right and strike the outside concrete barrier. The impact sent the vehicle back across both eastbound traffic lanes and into the grass median.  As the vehicle traveled into the median, it struck the cable barriers and continued down the roadway for approximately 100-feet before coming to rest.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, 47-year-old Abel Gonzalez of Houston, was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth hospital. Gonzalez was treated and released from the hospital just before 3a.m.

The 18-wheeler’s load, containing soap, was spilled onto the roadway. All eastbound traffic lanes of Interstate 10 were closed, but have since reopened.
