Tribes from all over North America converged Saturday, June 7, for the 46th annual Alabama-Coushatta Indian Tribe of Texas Powwow near Livingston. Chanting and tribal drumbeats could be heard as participants of all ages competed wearing traditional Native American regalia both vibrant and unique to each dancer. The powwow, which began with gourd dancing — a popular war dance — not only continued a time-honored tradition of paying respect to both elders and veterans, but also entertained thousands who drove from all over to attend the spectacle of Native American culture.
