Air Liquide adds new air separation plant

Air Liquide in Port Neches

An international company has strengthened its role as a key player in Southeast Texas’ economic base with the recent addition of a new air separation plant in Port Neches. Air Liquide operates a series of industrial gas plants and pipelines along the Gulf Coast.

The decision to build the new air separation plant required the assurance of an adequate supply of reliable electric power. To accomplish the goal, Air Liquide and Entergy Texas Inc., Southeast Texas’ electric utility company, worked together to develop the creative solutions needed to make the new facility a reality.

While Air Liquide worked to get its plant constructed and online, a project team was formed within Entergy Texas to design and construct reliable electric service for the new facility. The solution required construction of a new, high voltage substation and new transmission line segments in a relatively short period of time.

As a result of the two companies working together, Flatland Substation, adjacent to Air Liquide, as well as the associated transmission line segments, were completed and energized Sept. 15, 2015, making power available to the new plant in time for startup.

“We are in commissioning and startup activities right now with a goal to have the plant operational by end of Quarter 1, 2016,” said Heather Browne, director of Corporate Communications for Air Liquide USA LLC.

Air Liquide’s new air separation plant will produce 2,400 tons per day of oxygen and 2,600 tons per day of nitrogen, enabling Air Liquide to triple its production capacity of oxygen and double the production capacity of nitrogen of its Port Neches facility. To support the expansion Air Liquide has increased its workforce in Port Neches, hiring additional operators and technicians, a release by the company states.

John Buckley, CEO, Air Liquide USA LLC, said, “This expansion affirms Air Liquide’s investment commitment relative to our operations in Port Neches and throughout the Gulf Coast. We appreciate the continued support of our valued customers, local leaders and neighbors in the community as we continue to support business growth in the region and serve customers with excellence — providing high-quality products in a safe and reliable manner.”

Air Liquide employs more than 5,000 people in the U.S. in over 200 locations. The company offers industrial and medical gases, technologies and related services to customers in energy, industrial, electronics and healthcare markets.
