Alcohol may be contributing factor in off-duty officer's car crash

A Port Arthur police officer involved in a single-car accident near Valero in Port Arthur April 8 could face criminal charges pending an investigation, according to Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis.

In a news release, Davis reported the accident occurred on Friday at about 10:30 p.m. in front of the Valero Plant on SH 87. The Port Arthur Police Department originally responded to the accident but called DPS to assist with the investigation once they identified the driver as PAPD Officer Christopher Michael Duncan, 32, of Nederland.

According to initial reports, the pickup truck Duncan was driving was traveling on SH 87 in Jefferson County when he veered off the roadway and struck several metal structures. Duncan was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not life-threatening.

Davis stated in the release the troopers are in the preliminary stages of the investigation, but suspect that “alcohol may have contributed to this crash.”

All crash information is preliminary, and the investigation is ongoing.
