Beaumont man in custody after shooting at cop

A 26-year-old Beaumont man is in custody and awaiting arraignment on an attempted capital murder charge after he fired a shot a Beaumont police officer who was chasing him on foot.

Sgt. Rob Flores said police responded to a possible aggravated robbery around 9:30 this morning at the McDonalds on MLK and I-10 when employees inside the restaurant noticed a man acting strange in the parking lot before he entered the restaurant and went into the bathroom. The employees alerted a BISD security guard who was enjoying breakfast. The security guard then notified BISD Police who then notified Beaumont Police. The man left before police arrived.

Roughly three blocks from the McDonalds near I-10 and Averill, the officer spotted the man and the man ran from the officer. Near the West End AA building, the suspect fired a shot at the officer. He was not hit and "maintained cover," Flores said.

The suspect, who shed his hoodie while being chased, also tossed his pistol aside after he fired it, Flores said. The man was ultimately located a few minutes later and taken into custody without incident.
