May 9 at about 9:30 a.m., the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to man who was acting suspicious, Sheriff Henry Trochesset said in a release.

The man was reportedly pacing back and forth on the High Island Bridge.

When units arrived, it was discovered that he did jump from the bridge into the intracoastal canal. He was assisted by an unidentified person to the shoreline.

He was later transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston by medical helicopter. He suffered a broken leg and other possible injuries.

He was identified as a 40-year-old man from Beaumont.

Deputies learned he had been depressed for some time, although his mental condition was not known at the time of the incident, according to Trochesset.
