Beaumont police detective passes away from cancer

Detective Robert Ener, a 29-year veteran of the Beaumont Police Department who had been battling cancer, passed away over the weekend on May 28 at age 59, reports the department. 

In a statement, BPD remembered the long-time officer and brother in blue, and thanked the community for reaching out to help with medical expenses during a benefit held for Ener earlier this year. 

"The Beaumont Police Department regrets to inform you that Detective Robert Ener has passed away after a valiant battle with cancer," BPD posted to its Facebook page May 30. "Robert Ener ... was a Detective in the Criminal Investigation Division as a computer forensic analyst in the Property Crimes Unit. Last September, Robert was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and went through extensive medical treatment. We hosted a medical benefit for Robert back in March, and the community support was overwhelming.

"Please keep his family, blood and blue, in your prayers."

Ener was born and raised in Beaumont. He was a 1976 Cum Laude graduate of Forest Park High School and a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity in college. He began working at BPD in patrol and later transferred to drug interdiction. He was then promoted to detective and retired as a forensic computer expert in May 2017. Ener was a lifetime member of the NRA, and a member of the Wiergate Hunting and Fishing Club. According to his obituary, Ener loved hunting and fishing and "especially loved every moment he got to spend with his seven grandchildren."

Ener is survived by his wife of 33 years, Mary Ener of Beaumont; mother Margaret Ener of Hemphill; his daughters Megan Warrick and her husband Gary of Sour Lake, and Kelly Martinez and husband David of Colfax, Wisconsin; his grandchildren Robert Warrick, Lyric Warrick, BreeOnna Camp, Gary Warrick III, Miah Bodine, Tala Warrick and Jaden Truong; brother Stephen Ener and wife Julia nd Cypress; sisters, Diana Goetschius and husband Jack of Beaumont, Sherri Wright and husband Bruce of Liberty, and Dawn Graff and husband Billy of Beaumont, and 11 nieces and nephews and their spouses. 

Serving as pall bearers will be Chris Creason, Kenny Spitzer, Tim Mitchell, Reed Able, Ricky Anderson, Jerry Jackson, John Courts, Joshua Graff, Jacob Graff, Jonathan Graff, Joel Wright and Adam Ener.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 3, at Westgate Memorial Baptist Church in Beaumont. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Beaumont. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, June 2, at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home in Beaumont.
