Beaumont police search for injured suspect

Beaumont police are searching for a suspect who was reportedly shot by a homeowner while attempting to burglarize a vehicle at a Beaumont residence.

According to a news release from the Beaumont Police Department, officer were dispatched to the 2400 block of Liberty Street in Beaumont at approximately 5:20 a.m. on Monday, July 21, 2014 in reference to the reporting resident shooting a suspect as he attempted to burglarize his vehicle.  The homeowner reportedly told officers his motion detector activated, and he stepped out to see why. When he did, he saw the suspect, who then allegedly charged the homeowner. The homeowner fired one shot and struck the suspect somewhere in the lower chest area, he told investigators. The suspect fled the scene.

Officers quickly set up a perimeter, and followed a blood trail several city blocks.  A K-9 unit was called and tracked the suspect for a lengthy time, but eventually lost the scent, BPD reports. At this time the suspect has not been located. All of local emergency rooms have been notified to be on the lookout for a gunshot victim. The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6-foot tall, weighing 160 pounds, and wearing an unknown colored baseball cap, long black shorts and a dark-colored shirt. The suspect lost a large amount of blood and is believed to have a gunshot wound to his lower chest area.
