Beaumont resident and philanthropist dies at 96

Sallye Keith, born March 27, 1923.

The Gift of Life is mourning the passing of a longtime board member and Beaumont resident, Sallye Keith.

She was a board member since 1996 and the epitome of a phenomenal woman, according to the organization. An Illinois native, Sallye came to Beaumont in 1957 to work for the YWCA and dedicated her life to making a difference in Southeast Texas. She gave generously of her time and resources to innumerable local causes and was an ardent supporter of the Gift of Life since its inception.

Sallye annually sponsored a Gift of Life Mobile Mammography van site, which made available nearly 700 free breast health screenings to local women without health insurance. She also championed the Gift of Life's prostate cancer program, which provides free prostate cancer screenings for local men in need.

In 2004, the Gift of Life honored Sallye with the Julie Rogers "Spirit of Love" Award to recognize her extraordinary commitment to the organization’s cause. She was a fixture at all Gift of Life events, gracing the community with her effervescent smile and enthusiasm, according to the organization. Many can attest to her great love of music and dancing, particularly when "Ride, Sally, Ride" was played at Champagne & Ribs.
