Bicyclist killed in weekend hit and run

UPDATE: Victim identified, suspect found

Beaumont Police Traffic investigators identified the victim as Reginald Allen Osborne, a 46-year-old Vidor resident. Investigators were initially searching for the driver involved in the crash but have since identified the person. Charges are pending.

In the early morning hours of Sept. 2, a Beaumont police officer driving onto the interstate discovered a deceased bicyclist who had apparently been struck by a vehicle. Police are currently seeking information about the fatal accident.

According to a news release from the Beaumont Police Department (BPD), at 1:16 a.m. the officer was entering I-10 westbound from Pine Street and noticed a mound of what appeared to be debris in the roadway as he topped the on-ramp. As the officer appraoched, he saw a white male wearing a traffic vest was lying on the shoulder of the roadway. The officer stopped his patrol unit and attempted to contact the subject as he was approaching, but got no response. As he got closer, reports BPD, he could see the subject appeared to be deceased.

The traffic unit responded to the scene. From the initial investigation, officers say it appears the subject was riding his bicycle west on IH-10 and was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle that continued driving after impact. The victim has been identified, police stated, but next of kin had not been notified at the time of the release.

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information about the incident call the Beaumont Police Traffic Division at (409) 980-7254 or call Southeast Texas Crime Stoppers at (409) 833-8477 (TIPS) if you wish to remain anonymous.
