BISD teacher wins statewide award

Beaumont United teacher Keisha Kirkwood has been selected as the high school 2019 Outstanding Science Teacher of the Year by the Science Teachers Association of Texas, or STAT. This award recognizes excellence in science teaching.

Kirkwood teaches biology and AP biology at BUHS. She graduated from Sam Houston State University before joining BISD in 2010.

As a district leader in biology, she implements creativity in each lesson and differentiates curriculum so that each child is actively engaged, according to her bio on the STAT website. She uses multiple sources to represent content and interest students. Examples include visual, auditory, and verbal strategies, along with role-playing as a kinesthetic technique.

Her students explore science using laboratory investigations. She sparks her students’ curiosity with relevant and real-world teaching experiences. For Kirkwood, teaching is an ongoing process of learning. She learns with and from her students and strives to promote a love for learning, as she shares her love and passion for learning with them.
