TEA hosts pre-selection Board of Managers training in Beaumont

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) will host a pre-selection board of managers training session for the Beaumont Independent School District on Saturday, March 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Region 5 Education Service Center, 350 Pine Street, in Beaumont.

Community members are strongly encouraged to attend and participate in the session. TEA staff will be on hand to explain the significant impact and importance that the appointed board of managers’ decisions will ultimately have on student outcomes in the district.

All individuals who have formally submitted a board application are invited to attend as part of TEA’s board appointment process. The training will provide insight on TEA expectations from the appointed board, specifically on improving student performance on all campuses within the district. In addition, the session will give community members an opportunity to have open discussion with Board of Managers candidates.

In 2014, Commissioner of Education Michael Williams named and installed a board of managers in the district. The commissioner’s decision to appoint a board followed two TEA investigations into various BISD special education, finance and governance issues. The appointed Board of Managers will replace the currently appointed members of the Beaumont ISD board of managers who are stepping down at the close of the 2016-17 school year.

A majority on the board must consist of members of the Beaumont ISD community who are committed to service on behalf of the students of the district. Commissioner of Education Mike Morath will review and make the final selections for the new board of managers. A formal announcement regarding the commissioner’s appointments will be made in the near future.
