Boat accident claims life of 10-year-old

A 10-year-old girl died as the result of a boating accident on July 12, deputies with the Orange County Sheriff's Office report.

According to a news release from OCSO, dispatch received an emergency call at about 6:20 p.m. on July 12 in reference to a boating accident that occurred on the Sabine River near the end of West Bluff Road in the north Orange area of Orange County.

When Deputies and rescue personnel with Emergency Services District #3 arrived on scene, they discovered a man, later identified as 40-year-old Andy Borel, and his two daughters had been out in a boat on the Sabine River when inclement weather struck the area. The man was operating the boat and collided with a dock, losing control and ejecting all three occupants, according to OCSO. The boat immediately sank underwater.

The man's 7-year-old daughter, identified as Ann Borel, sustained serious injuries to her hand and leg. The other girl, who was 10 and reportedly wearing her life jacket, could not be immediately found. Emergency personnel continued to arrive at the scene and searched for the little girl. After some time, they located the boat underwater and the 10-year-old girl, identified as Janae Borel, was underwater nearby, where she had been trapped by the boat. She was non-responsive at the scene, OCSO reports.

Both girls were transported to the Baptist Hospital in Orange, but life-saving measures could not revive the 10-year-old, says OCSO. She was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Judge David Peck arrived and ordered an autopsy. She was taken to the Jefferson County Morgue for examination.

The 7-year-old was airlifted from Orange to a Houston hospital due to the severity and type of her injuries. She had surgery, OCSO reports, and was recovering from surgery on July 13.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Game Wardens were also on scene and are conducting the accident investigation. The father did not sustain any serious injury. The investigation is ongoing and more information could be released as it becomes available, OCSO reports.
