Body of drowning victim recovered from Neches River

The body of a woman who drowned in the Neches River afternoon has been recovered.

Just before 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, a 911 call was received reporting a drowning at the end of Pine Street at the Neches River. According to a release from the city of Beaumont, a 61-year-old woman was reportedly swimming in the river with her husband when she went under and did not come back up. Beaumont Fire Rescue divers began searching the river while Beaumont police officers checked the area. Boats with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Parks and Wildlife joined the search.

Suspended Thursday night at dark, the search resumed Friday morning, and shortly after 8 a.m., Beaumont Fire Rescue divers were on the scene preparing to continue the search when a city worker spotted a body downstream. Divers were able to recover the body of 61-year-old Lisa Allen of Beaumont, and family members were able to positively identify her. Judge Dollinger has ordered an autopsy.
