Capital murder charge in pregnant mother's murder dropped; new suspects in custody

Jared Bias murder charge dropped

When pregnant mother Kera Teel was shot and killed in June, the Southeast Texas community was stunned and police relentlessly pursued numerous leads in an attempt to identify and apprehend the perpetrators who fled the scene following the abhorrent act.

Detectives reached out to the community for help, and, through their investigation, finally found someone who they believed was present at the shooting and could provide answers as to what happened, why and who pulled the trigger. Atayanna Asia Nicole Douglas, who remains in the Jefferson County Jail on $1.5 million in bonds for three counts of aggravated robbery, was arrested in Lake Charles on June 13. Douglas reportedly told police she was at the scene of Teel’s June 6 murder and identified the shooter as suspected YOG gang member Jared Bias of Beaumont.

Police soon arrested Bias and charged him with Teel’s murder. Bias had turned himself in to police June 14 on an unrelated charge and was served with the capital murder warrant while in custody. Nov. 7, Beaumont Police Department Officer Haley Morrow said the murder charges against Bias have been dropped.

According to Morrow, “Since June 6, 2017, Detectives with the Beaumont Police Department have worked tirelessly on the Capital Murder investigation of Kera Teel and her baby, Kyndal. During the course of the investigation Detectives had to sort through many leads given by individuals who were involved or pretended to have knowledge of the crime… At the request of Detectives, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office has dropped the Capital Murder Charges against Jared Bias.”

Morrow said police continued to investigate Teel’s murder and other possibly related crimes across the area even after Bias was arrested for the shooting. As the investigation expanded, detectives reportedly learned new details that led them to three juvenile suspects and determined the charges against Bias should be dropped.

The three juvenile suspects are in custody on other charges at this time, Morrow said. Their names may not be released pending certification as adults. According to Morrow, at that time, the suspects are expected to be formally charged with the Capital Murder of Kera Teel and Kyndal, her daughter who died after birth following the shooting.

While the murder charges against him were dropped, Bias still faces several charges stemming from other criminal acts, Morrow reported.

“The Beaumont Police Department is confident that those involved in Kera and Kyndal Teel’s death will be held responsible,” she said. “This has been a very complex case, and we want nothing more than for justice to be served.”
