Christus, Humane Society team up to find homes for orphaned canines

Christus Hospital hosted a canine adoption event, “The 12 Dogs of Christmas,” Friday, Dec. 13, at the St. Elizabeth Outpatient Pavilion in Beaumont.

Carrie May, shelter manager for the Humane Society of Southeast Texas, said this is the first year the shelter and Christus have teamed up to hold an adoption drive and the effort was quite successful. The goal going into the event, May said, was to have two dogs adopted and raise $1,000, but that goal was surpassed and five dogs — Honor, Lacey, Kip, Annie and Joe — found new homes and more than $1,900 was raised for the Humane Society of Southeast Texas along with numerous bags of dog food and supplies.

Donations go directly toward giving animals the best care possible until they can be found a home, and to pay for food, medicine and other supplies, according to the Humane Society of Southeast Texas website.

“Each year, the Nursing Division at Christus Hospital selects a community organization to help during the holidays,” said Michelle Hammerly, director of education at Christus Hospital – St. Elizabeth and St. Mary and coordinator of the event. “This year, Nursing teamed up with our Pet Partners and ‘adopted’ the Humane Society of Southeast Texas.”

The Pet Partners program has been in place at both St. Elizabeth and St. Mary hospitals since 2004 and allows four-legged canine guests to visit patients, according to Christus literature. The program was established by Hammerly and utilizes dogs of many breeds and sizes, bringing smiles and joy to patients and staff alike in pediatrics, telemetry, oncology and other medical units.

“Our Pet Partners were onsite taking donations at the hospital, spreading holiday cheer as only a dog can,” Hammerly said. “The event was successful, and everyone had a great time. We hope to do it again next year.”

“It was amazing,” May said. “This was the best event we’ve had in a long time.”
