Citizen seeking cell phone stumbles upon thief's stash

A citizen in search of his stolen cell phone tracked the device to a Port Arthur residence where officers investigating the theft reportedly discovered a sizable stash of presumably stolen property.

According to a news release from the Port Arthur Police Department (PAPD), dispatch received a call from the man searching for his cell phone who was at a residence in the 3000 block of 15th Street after tracking the device to that location. The man had knocked on the door of the residence and confronted the suspect. The suspect fled when the man called police, the caller told officers.

Officers did not find the suspect at the residence, but when they looked into the still-open door of the abode found what appeared to them to be a stockpile of stolen items.

After obtaining a search warrant, investigators recovered a large amount of evidence from the scene, which they said could provide evidence of more than 15 area burglaries.

The investigation is ongoing.
