City preps for statewide Texas Trash Off
As winter weather slowly recedes from Southeast Texas and spring takes its place, the city of Beaumont is doing a little pre-spring cleaning in areas of the city most affected by trash and other litter as part of the statewide Texas Trash Off.
Rain or shine, city officials are hoping Beaumont’s second annual Trash Off will be one to remember.
“We had 750 volunteers come out last year, which was a fantastic turnout, and they picked up nearly three tons of trash here in the city,” said city spokeswoman Danielle Underferth.
The Trash Off will begin with coffee and donuts Saturday, April 6, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at locations within each of Beaumont’s four wards.
“Each Ward is represented,” Underferth said. “It’s best to pre-register so they’re guaranteed a T-shirt. They pick which registration site is more convenient for them. And then, when they get there, we give them their cleanup materials and we kind of disperse them to locations that we’ve identified that need attention.”
Volunteers who wish to bring their own gloves are encouraged to do so. Although the city will provide amenities like food and water throughout the day, Underferth said bringing your own water is a good idea.
“We’ll have donuts and juice in the morning, and we’ll have links and a drink after the event is over,” she said.
Underferth said it is important to remove unsightly trash that would otherwise be removed using city tax dollars, adding it’s important for Beaumont’s youth to get involved.
“Litter is detrimental to businesses, it’s detrimental to home values, it’s detrimental to tourism, and we really feel it’s important that we have a litter-free community, and we want to get people involved in that effort,” she said. “The city goes to great lengths to keep our parks and right of ways clean, but it really takes a community to get it done. It’s a great lesson also for kids to get out there and see that someone has to pick this stuff up.”
Only those who pre-register on the city’s website at www.cityofbeaumont.com are guaranteed a T-shirt. After pre-registering, volunteers representing all wards will meet at the following locations:
Ward 1 – Wuthering Heights Park, 3650 Delaware St.
Ward 2 – Athletic Complex, 950 Langham Road
Ward 3 – Sterling Pruitt Activity Center, 2930 Gulf St.
Ward 4 – Charlton-Pollard Park, 2025 Sabine Pass Ward IV – Sprott Park, 4325 Usan St.
Underferth said if more volunteers come this year than last, litterbugs might be deterred from discarding their unsightly trash.
“A cleaner area stays cleaner,” she said. “People are more likely to litter in a place that’s already littered.”
