Contestants for 2013 Mr. Habitat announced

Here he comes, Mr. Habitat! Habitat for Humanity of Jefferson County announced the contestants for the Mr. Habitat 2013 title. The competition is part of the organization’s 2013 Mr. Habitat: Heartthrob Fundraiser. The group met with media on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at Goodfella’s Restaurant in Beaumont to introduce the contestants and discuss exciting upcoming events.

According to Uliana Trylowsky, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Jefferson County, the contest is not actually about good looks. She said the event is more of a “spoof” on beauty pageants.

“We are introducing to the public nine contestants for the Mr. Habitat event that is happening in February (2013). … The guys are not selected for beauty, or they don’t compete on those grounds. … At the event, they compete, and I am loosely using that word, in four rounds of competition that include a talent portion, a building competition and answering questions. This will be our fifth annual Mr. Habitat.”

Trylowsky said Habitat is introducing a new element, the Mr. Habitat “heartthrob,” to coincide with Valentine’s Day.

“Each of the guys has been charged with coming up with a heartthrob they are going to impersonate,” Trylowsky said. “It can be anyone from Rudolph Valentino to Justin Bieber to James Bond to Elvis. It could be a poet or a scientist.”

Trylowsky said the men chosen to compete would bring a variety of sponsors for the event. The event is scheduled for Feb. 16, 2013. The contestants are Chester Jourdan of JK Chevrolet, Philip Long of Long Architects, Kasey Nonette of the Beaumont Police Department, Kevin Reed of Keller Williams Real Estate, Saeed Serrant of the Port Arthur Police Department, Marc Shepherd of the Texas Department of Transportation, Robin Strother of Ashland Inc., Paul Szuch of Lamar Institute of Technology, and attorney Sean Villery-Samuel. JK Subaru is sponsoring the event with additional sponsor ITEX Building. Habitat for Humanity is still actively seeking sponsors for the event.
