Cyclist injured in officer-involved accident dies

A 19-year-old bicyclist injured in the early morning hours of Feb. 23, 2016, when struck by a Orange Police Department patrol car has died.

Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating the accident involving an officer with the Orange Police Department and a cyclist that occurred on the eastbound service road of Interstate 10 at Adams Bayou shortly after midnight.

In a news release, Trooper Stephanie Davis reported DPS received the call at about 12:15 a.m. According to Davis, initial reports indicated the bicyclist was traveling west in the outside traffic lane of the eastbound service road of Interstate 10 at Adams Bayou. The police officer was traveling east in the outside lane of the eastbound service road. As the bicyclist traveled facing oncoming traffic, he was struck by the police officer’s vehicle.  According to witnesses, the bicycle did not have any type of lighting equipment on the front.

The bicyclist, 19-year-old Devon Lynn Lestage of Orange, was transported to St. Elizabeth hospital in Beaumont with serious injuries. He was on life support as of 4 p.m. Feb. 24, and a DPS press release on Feb. 25 said he died at St. Elizabeth hospital from injuries suffered in the crash. The Orange police officer, Brian Latiolais, was not injured.

Orange County troopers are investigating the incident.
