Deputies search for escapee who assaulted officer

UPDATE: Robert Lee Durant is now behind bars.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Fugitive Warrant Division worked through the evening and located Durant hiding in a residence in Beaumont’s North end. Durant was taken into custody without incident, and transported to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility.


Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies are searching for a man who escaped custody while at Drug Impact Court on Monday, May 15, and injured an officer, reports Deputy Marcus McLellan.

According to a news release from McLellan, 29-year-old Robert Lee Durant received a sentence of eight years for possession of controlled substance. Before he could be taken to jail, Durant allegedly assaulted a deputy at the court and escaped. Durant was reportedly being escorted to the holding cell to await transfer to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility, and fled. Deputies caught him briefly and tried to gain control of Durant but couldn't. He was able to get away from the deputies after punching an officer in the face. He continued to run and fled out of the building.

Deptuies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office are actively searching for Durant. He is 6-foot-4, 192 pounds, has black hair and light brown skin, and was last seen wearing a black shirt and yellow pants.
