Dishman tree dedication honors late coach

When Mark Gregory “Greg” Brown, who coached physical education at Dishman Elementary for many years, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2016, during Spring Break, he was only 53. Sensing his loss at the Beaumont school, the grandparent of a student sought to plant a living memorial to Coach Brown.

“Coach was the staff member who greeted parents and grandparents as they entered the drive during dismissal and would call out the students names on the walkie talkie,” explained Dishman Principal Mellow Tatmon. “Student Aubree Fears’ grandmother, Mary Fears, wanted to donate a tree in memory of coach because of his kindness.”

A tree dedication was held Jan. 6.

A native and lifelong resident of Beaumont, Greg was born March 4, 1963, to Shirley Bumstead Brown and Mark Edward Brown Jr. A physical education teacher at Amelia and then Dishman Elementary, Greg worked for BISD for 27 years.

He had three children, Joseph Brown of Beaumont, and Hannah Brown and Jillian Brown of Orange. His interment at Magnolia Cemetery, Beaumont, was held March 19, 2016.
