DPS investigating crash between off-duty officer and elderly woman

Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) are investigating a Port Arthur accident between an off-duty police officer escorting a funeral procession on his motorcycle and an elderly Nederland woman.

According to information from Sgt. Stephanie Davis, DPS received a report of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 365 and 9th Avenue in Port Arthur at approximately 12:45 p.m. Investigating troopers learned that a funeral procession was traveling southbound on Highway 365 approaching 9th Avenue in Port Arthur. Two police officers riding motorcycles were escorting the procession. The first officer activated the emergency lights on his motorcycle and pulled into the intersection to stop traffic for the funeral procession. With traffic stopped, the second officer with his bike's emergency lights activated entered the intersection and was struck by a Honda Civic that failed to yield the right-of-way by pulling out into the intersection from 9th Avenue, reported Davis. As the car struck the motorcycle, the officer was ejected from his motorcycle and rolled over the hood of the car.

DPS identified the driver of the Honda as 85-year-old Salma Mehio. She was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth hospital. Following the accident Davis described Mehio as alert and stated she would be at the hospital a couple of hours for observation.

DPS identified the officer as Rose City Deputy Marshal Douglas Klinkhammer. Klinkhammer was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth hospital. Following the accident he was "alert and undergoing several examinations to determine the extent of his injuries," Davis reported.

The crash investigation is ongoing.
