Drunk driver causes head on collision on FM 365

On March 17 around 2:00 p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a two vehicle crash on FM 365 in Jefferson County. The crash occurred just outside of the city limits of Port Arthur.

Initial reports indicate that a Ford F250 pickup truck was traveling westbound on FM 365. The driver of the vehicle was travel at an unsafe speed and lost control. The vehicle traveled into the eastbound traffic lane and struck a Dodge pickup truck.

The driver of the Dodge, 54-year-old Gary Gamble of LaMarque, was not injured in the crash.

The driver of the Ford, 28-year-old Travis VanPelt of Beaumont, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital as a precaution. VanPelt was released a short time later. The passenger, a 3-year-old child, was properly secured in a car seat and did not sustain any injuries.

After investigating the crash and interviewing VanPelt at the scene, troopers concluded that VanPelt was intoxicated. After being released from the hospital, VanPelt was placed under arrest and charged with DWI with child passenger, which is a state jail felony. .
