Elementary student assaults two teachers

Two teachers trying to break up a fight between two 10-year-olds at Mauriceville Elementary School in Orange were assaulted by one of the students involved in the altercation, reports the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO).

A sheriff’s log indicates that deputies were dispatched to the school on F.M. 1130 in Orange at about 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 10 in reference to a student assault on two teachers. According to OCSO Criminal Investigator Janois Strause Grizzaffi, the two teachers were trying to separate the children involved in the altercation when the educators were assaulted.

Little Cypress-Mauriceville Consolidated Independent School District Community Relations Coordinator Sherry Combs said both teachers are doing well, and the district is following its disciplinary protocol in relation to the incident to keep students and staff safe in the educational atmosphere.

"As in any situation relating to students, we can only tell you that the student code of conduct is being followed in deciding the discipline appropriate to this situation," Combs stated via email.

Grizzaffi said from her experience working in schools, she knows that reporting an assault to law enforcement is a step teachers must often take when trying to assist students with behavioral issues.
