'Environmental exposure' may have caused Port Arthur man's death

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was called out in reference to a missing person Monday evening, June 14, near the Jefferson County Remote Aircraft Field located off Highway 347. Officers were searching for 56-year-old Stephen Shoemaker, of Port Arthur, at the time. He was last seen at the airfield looking for a remote airplane that had crashed in the nearby woods and when he did not return home, a search was started.

Around 9 the next morning, Shoemaker's body was found with the assistance of a JCSO helicopter. He was found lying in thick brush and deputies immediately determined Shoemaker was dead.

An autopsy was ordered by Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett and results from a preliminary autopsy reveal he may have died from "environmental exposure."
