Fatal accident in Beaumont

Beaumont police report an early morning accident involving a passenger car and an 18-wheeler resulted in a fatality June 1, Beaumont Police Department Officer Tony Harding reported Wednesday.

According to Harding, officers were dispatched to the 2700 block of Eastex Freeway in reference to an accident at 12:48 a.m. Investigators learned that the driver of a tan Nissan Sentra lost control of his vehicle and consequently crashed into the dividing barricade. The impact of the crash spun the Sentra around, said Harding, causing the vehicle to come to a rest facing oncoming traffic.

Drivers of other vehicles observed the wreck and stopped to help. As they were assisting the driver with picking up various scattered pieces of his vehicle, the driver reentered his Sentra. Moments later, an 18-wheeler traveling in the same lane was unable to stop in time, reported Harding, and slammed into the Sentra with the driver still inside. The driver, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of his next-of-kin, was killed in the crash.

UPDATE: Police have identified the driver to the Nissan Sentra, now deceased, as Mexican citizen Osvaldo Mendeta Rugerio.
