Fatal accident in Hardin County

Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers are investigating a fatal accident involving an SUV and an 18-wheeler that occurred in Hardin County on Highway 96 near the Hardin-Jasper county line on Dec. 14 at about 6 p.m.

According to a news release from DPS, a 2012 Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling westbound on a small country road, attempting to turn southbound onto Highway 96. The truck tractor crossed the northbound lanes of the highway and stopped at the crossover to wait to merge into southbound traffic. While stopped at the crossover, the trailer of the truck was jutting out into the north inside lane of Highway 96, blocking the roadway there. A 2013 GMC sports utility vehicle traveling northbound in the inside lane struck the trailer of the truck.

The driver of the SUV, 75-year-old Carolyn Hammond of Buna, was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver, a 51-year-old Louisiana man, was not injured, DPS reports.

Troopers are still in the initial stages of the investigation but, according to the release, they do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
