Fatal accidents this weekend in Orange and Hardin Counties

UPDATE (9/18): The fatal crash that occurred on Sept. 17 on TX 12 in Orange County has claimed the life of a second person. The passenger on the Yamaha motorcycle, 24-year-old Chelsea Miller of Buna, died late Sunday night from injuries sustained in the two vehicle crash. Initially, Miller was flown to St. Elizabeth hospital with serious injuries. This crash remains under investigation.

On Sept. 17 at about 1:30 p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to a two vehicle crash at the intersection of TX 12 and Woodridge Drive in Orange County, Sgt. Stephanie Davis said in a release.

Preliminary reports indicate that a 2004 Dodge pickup truck was stopped at a stop sign at Woodridge Drive and TX 12. A 1998 Yamaha motorcycle was traveling westbound on TX 12. The driver of the Dodge failed to yield the right of way and pulled out in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle struck the Dodge pickup truck in the left front panel. Upon impact, both vehicles caught fire.

The driver of the motorcycle, Cory Menard, 25, of Buna, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Joy Dubose-Simonton.

The passenger of the motorcycle, a 24-year-old female from Buna, was transported by medical helicopter to St. Elizabeth hospital in serious condition. Her name will not be released until her next of kin has been notified.

The driver of the Dodge, a 67 year old Orange man, did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

On Sept. 17, at about 6:30p.m., DPS responded to a two vehicle crash on FM 770 in Hardin County. The crash occurred approximately two miles south of Batson.

Preliminary reports indicate that a 2015 Kubota tractor was traveling southbound on FM 770 followed by a 2015 Chevrolet pickup truck. The driver of the Kubota tractor slowed down and pulled off the roadway. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Kubota attempted to get back onto the roadway and was rear-ended by the Chevrolet pickup truck. Upon impact, the driver of the Kubota tractor was ejected from the vehicle.

The driver of the Kubota tractor, 39-year-old Brian Sumrall of Batson, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Jackie Werner.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 35 year old Hull man, was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth hospital with minor injuries.
