Fatal auto-pedestrian accident in Jasper County

A late night auto-pedestrian accident claimed the life of a Buna man April 27, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis reported in a news release.

According to Davis, the crash occurred last night at approximately 11:30 p.m. on US 96 at CR 722 in Jasper County. A 2013 Dodge Avenger was traveling southbound on US 96 approaching CR 722. A pedestrian was attempting to cross US 96 when he was struck by the Dodge.

The pedestrian, Jeremy Widener, 26, of Buna, was transported by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. After arriving at the hospital, Widener was pronounced dead by medical staff just before 1:00 a.m. April 28. The driver of the Dodge, Teresa Vigeon, 58, of Silsbee, was not injured in the crash.

The intersection where the crash occurred does not have any street lighting, Davis stated in the release.

The crash is still under investigation.
