Fatal crash claims one life; Lumberton officer recovering from injuries

A Lumberton police officer is recovering from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident that claimed the life of a 22-year-old woman Feb. 18, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis reports.

According to Davis, Lumberton Police Officer John Ware is recovering from cuts, bruises and a broken foot suffered in a two-vehicle crash that occurred in the city of Lumberton on the evening of Feb. 18. A full recovery is expected.

In a series of news releases, Davis reported DPS troopers responded to the accident involving Officer Ware and Janet Marie Lowe of Thicket, Texas on U.S. 96 at West Chance Cutoff Road in Lumberton at approximately 10 p.m. Thursday night.

DPS investigators determined Ware was traveling southbound on U.S. 96 approaching West Chance Cutoff Road when a passenger vehicle positioned in the northbound turning lane of the intersection made a left turn in front of the officer's patrol car and was struck in the passenger-side door. Lowe, the driver of the passenger vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Melissa Minton. Ware was transported to St. Elizabeth hospital in Beaumont for treatment.
