Fatal crash in Orange County
Department of Public Safety troopers responded to a fatal accident Sunday night, June 29, DPS reports.
According to a news release from DPS, troopers responded to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on S.H. 62 at Tulane Road at approximately 9:20 p.m. Per DPS, the preliminary crash investigation suggests that a 2008 Toyota Tacome truck, driven by 27-year-old Stevan Shonn Smith of Orange, was traveling south on S.H. 62. Smith reportedly failed to drive in a single lane and struck a northbound 2014 Nissan Versa, driven by 74-year-old Richard Shelton of Port Arthur, head on.
Smith was transported to Baptist Hospital in Orange, and a passenger in his vehicle was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Beaumont. Both Shelvin and a passenger in his vehicle were alsoo taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Beaumont, where Shelvin was pronounced deceased, DPS reports. The conditions of the other occupants remains unknown at this time.
The crash is being investigated, and anytime a death results from a wreck, blood samples are taken for testing. A toxicology report is pending.
