An abandoned church in the 5100 block of Hunter Street caught fire Monday, Nov. 13, Beaumont Fire-Rescue Capt. Jimmy Blanchard said in a statement.

The church was located at the corner of Hunter Street and Jim Gilligan Way, near Lamar University.

When responders arrived, they found a building with the second floor heavily involved in fire.

Blanchard said that fire crews made a fast attack but were pushed back by fire conditions to a defensive posture. Firefighters ordered an evacuation, and after a short while fire crews went back inside to fight fire. No injuries were reported to either civilians or responders.

The building had no utilities services, Blanchard said. The fire was ruled to be intentionally set.

The Beaumont Fire Marshal’s office and Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office are conducting an investigation.

Officials are asking that anyone with any information about this fire, should call Crime Stoppers at (409) 833-TIPS. You will not be asked for your name.
