France honors Southeast Texas vets in San Antonio

Beaumont resident Arlie Ray Horn, 90, and 94-year-old Vidor resident Robert L. Jackson both received the Knight medal of the French Legion of Honour on Friday, Nov. 14, from the Consulate General of France Sujiro Seam at Fort Sam Houston, MacArthur Field in San Antonio. The medal is awarded for excellent civil or military conduct and is primarily given to French citizens, but has also been historically given to U.S. World War II veterans for their efforts to liberate France from German occupation. Horn, a U.S. Army Veteran, fought at Omaha Beach during the battle of D-Day. and Jackson, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, served as a tail gunner on a B-17 that was shot down by the Germans. He was held as a POW for one year before being freed by U.S. forces.
