Galveston officer shoots, kills fleeing suspect

Luis Fernendo Argueta, a 19-year-old male, died from gunshots fired by a Galveston police officer.

According to a press release by Galveston County Sherriff’s Office, the morning of Monday, June 25, at approximately 3 a.m., the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office received a request from Galveston Police Department to assist in the investigation of an Officer involved shooting at the 5300 block of Ave. L. 

GPD officers reported observing a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of Sonny’s Convenience Store at 51st and Broadway. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled from them. When the vehicle stopped, the driver, Argueta, fled on foot and into a vacant lot.  After giving verbal commands to the suspect, the officer fired two rounds from his service weapon, striking the fleeing Argueta.  Argueta was transported to University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital where he died from his wounds. According to the press release, investigators recovered a weapon at the scene.

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office and the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident. Argueta was transported to the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office pending an autopsy. Witnesses are being interviewed and the investigation continues.
