Groves Man Killed In KMTEX Blast

58-year-old Johnny Williams of Groves was killed by the blast yesterday at the KMTex Plant in Port Arthur that also injured three other workers.

According to Rod Carroll, Public Information Officer with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the explosion appears to have been caused by welding on a pipeline inside the plant where coal-tar solvent was also being used. The explosion sent two workers by medevac to UTMB-Galveston, one with head trauma and the other with a broken femur. A third injured worker was taken to St. Mary's Christus.

Carroll said the fire was extinguished fairly quickly and by the time Jefferson County Sheriff's personnel arrived. OSHA will be in the plant to conduct an investigation on what caused the explosion.
