H-E-B offers new sites for vehicle-registration renewal

Tax Assessor-Collector Allison Nathan Getz ‘deputizes’ HEB employees.

As drivers throughout Texas transition from a dual-sticker system for vehicle registration and state inspections, residents of Jefferson County can now complete the new “Two Steps, One Sticker” process at the HEB Business Center at 3590 College St. in Beaumont.

Drivers must present an official Inspection and Registration Notice of renewal issued by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, proof of liability insurance, and funds to cover the cost of registration and the processing fee of $7.50. A current, passing vehicle inspection is required prior to registration renewal.

Effective March 1 of this year, the Texas Department of Public Safety will no longer issue state inspection stickers to vehicles at the time of inspection. Drivers are instead provided with a copy of the Vehicle Inspection Report and a record of the inspection is electronically updated in the state database. Once the inspection has been completed, drivers can obtain the vehicle registration sticker as combined proof of both state inspection and vehicle registration. Inspection statuses will be verified electronically.

Drivers with a current, passing inspection can renew their vehicle registration through Feb. 29, 2016.

The first of three HEB locations in Southeast Texas began processing vehicle registration renewals July 22 at the Business Center, open 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. seven days a week.

Jefferson County Tax Assessor-Collector Allison Nathan Getz said she decided to bring this option to Southeast Texas after learning other counties throughout the state offered vehicle registration services at alternative locations.

“By allowing H-E-B to process these transactions, the taxpayers are given much greater flexibility every day of the week, including Saturday and Sunday and early evenings during the week,” said Getz.

Of the 225,000 vehicle registrations processed by the Jefferson County Tax Office every year, more than 179,000 renewals are processed in person.

“Once I found out how many people were actually coming in person to do this in the office, it just made sense,” Getz said. “If that many people feel the need to come and do this in person, why not make it more convenient for them?”

Two other locations at 3025 Dowlen in Beaumont and 4800 FM 365 in Port Arthur will begin offering this service once they receive their scanners and registration-renewal equipment, Getz said.

License plates must still be replaced at one of three Jefferson County Tax Offices: at 525 Lakeshore Drive in Port Arthur, or 4605 Jerry Ware and 1149 Pearl St. in Beaumont. Those who cannot present a copy of their renewal notice must come into the tax office, open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
