House fire injures two in Beaumont

Two people sustained injuries in a house fire in Beaumont June 18, reports Beaumont Fire-Rescue Capt. Brad Penisson.

According to Penisson, units responded to a reported structure fire in the 1800 block of Rafes Way shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday morning. Callers alerted firefighters that although the 65-year-old male resident had escaped, the man's 69-year-old wife was still inside. Firefighters found the woman just inside a rear door of the home. EMS treated both victims at the scene and then transported them to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital. The male resident was treated and released, but the female victim sustained more sever injuries in the fire and was flown to Galveston for further treatment.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, confining the blaze the a rear bedroom of the home, but there was smoke and heat damage throughout the house, Penisson reported. He said the fire appears to have been accidental and caused by smoking materials.
