Inmate dies in Jefferson County Jail

An immate at the Jefferson County Jail died in custody, reports Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Captain Crystal Holmes, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine what caused the 70-year-old man's death. 

In a news release, Capt. Holmes indicated that an inmate in the medical infirmary reported that his bunk mate was unresponsive at about 6:30 a.m. June 4. Jail staff immediately began CPR and notified EMS. They continued CPR until EMS arrived and took over. The inmate was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

An autopsy has been ordered, Holmes stated in the news release, and it is anticipated to be completed today. Holmes indicated JCSO would release the name of the deceased when the autopsy is complete and the man's family has been notfied. He was currently in custody for failure to register as a sex offender.
