Jefferson County commissioners approve contract for inmate health
Jefferson County commissioners approved a two-year contract with ConMed Healthcare Management Inc. for inmate health care services at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility at their meeting Jan. 22. The initial contract period is from Jan. 29, 2013, to Jan. 28, 2015, with an option to renew for three additional one-year terms.
“Inmate healthcare is expensive,” Judge Jeff Branick said regarding the contract. He said of the health management companies participating in the bid for the contract, ConMed had the lowest bid totaling $6,339,840 for two years. Commissioners approved the measure unanimously.
In other matters, Commissioner Everett “Bo” Alfred voted against a measure to receive and file a letter of intent to enter a ground lease agreement with Delta Government Leasing Corporation for property located at Jack Brooks Regional Airport. According to Branick, the company wants to build office space for governmental entities such as the Deptartment of Health and Welfare. Alfred previously expressed concerns that moving offices to the airport from downtown could cause accessibility issues for local residents. Commissioners approved the measure 4-1.
At the end of the meeting, Branick encouraged business owners and anyone concerned to attend a presentation at Ford Park Jan. 24 regarding the implementation of the Affordable Healthcare Act.
“This week at 10 a.m., Jan. 24, … Mr. Den Bishop with Holmes Murphy Consulting Services, one of the top medical consulting firms in the state, is going to be at Ford Park to give a presentation on strategic planning to help deal with the Affordable Healthcare Act and how it affects businesses,” Branick told the group. “You would need to go the Holmes Murphy website to contact them to RSVP for the event sponsored by the Jefferson County Commissioners Court. We’re very thankful that Mr. Bishop, who is a nationally known expert in this area, has agreed to come down here, and it should be very enlightening.”
Bishop is the president of Holmes Murphy Texas.
Branick also mentioned that the new American Airlines route from Jack Brooks Regional Airport to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport would be starting service very soon.
“I also want to remind the public again that beginning Feb. 14, American Airlines will begin service out of the Jack Brooks Regional Airport. Looking online now … I think a ticket to Dallas-Fort Worth is about $113, which is a real bargain. Also, keep in mind that American flies to … 186 destinations out of Jefferson County now. So whether you want to go to New York or Paris you can do it out of Jefferson County. Go on AA.com and take a look at that.”
