Jefferson County Commissioners proclaim National 4-H Week

Jefferson County Commissioners proclaimed Oct. 7-13 as National 4-H Week in Jefferson County during their regular meeting Monday, Oct. 8, at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Beaumont. Members of the 4-H Club Jefferson County Youth Council visited Commissioners Court to celebrate the event. 4-H spokesperson Lairen Calhoun addressed the council on behalf of the group.

“For more than 150 years, the 4-H program of Texas has been engaging youth in activities that help develop skills for a lifetime,” Calhoun said. “Regardless of the skills, the benefits gathered from the young person … are priceless.”

Calhoun continued by thanking the Jefferson County Commissioners for the proclamation and the support of the community for the program. Members of local 4-H clubs around the area presented the commissioners with gift bags as tokens of gratitude.

Commissioners also proclaimed October 2012 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Jefferson County. Jefferson County Victims’ Assistance Center Director Misty Craver stepped up to the podium to thank Jefferson County for continued support in the ongoing battle against domestic violence.

“I really appreciate the support, as always, of Jefferson County,” Craver said. “I’m basically just here to let y'all know we are still going strong. … We’re trying to take some additional strides in making sure that batterers were held accountable for their actions in court.”
