LCM high school graduate dies in Newton County head on collision

One young woman died Sunday, Dec. 4 after a head on collision in Newton County, DPS PIO Stephanie Davis said in a release. Taylor Nicole Luther, 18, of Orange, was transported to St. Elizabeth's hospital by ambulance, but she did not survive her injuries.

According to DPS, the crash happened about 12:30 p.m. on Highway 87 in Newton County about one mile south of Deweyville. A 2014 Dodge pickup truck was traveling southbound when the driver hydroplaned in the rain, crossing the center line and colliding with a 2001 Ford Escape headed northbound.

The driver of the Dodge truck, 35-year-old Jared Michael Moore of Orange, was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth's hospital. "Moore sustained serious injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening," Davis said in a statement. The accident closed Highway 87 in both directions for about an hour.

The Little Cypress Mauriceville Band Boosters posted condolences on their Facebook page on Dec. 4 at 6:23 p.m.

"It is with heavy hearts that the LCM Band Boosters offers our condolences to the family of Taylor Luther," the post read. "Taylor was a beautiful and talented young woman. She was kind, smart, hard working and funny. She will truly be missed by all who knew her."

According to her Facebook profile, Luther was a 2016 graduate of Little Cypress Mauriceville High School.

DPS is continuing to investigate this fatal crash.
