Letter to the editor: Tax reform needed

GOP elephant

As a small business owner and a Republican for most of my life, I was pleased the GOP won the White House and majorities in Congress in the 2016 election, but now the American people need to see results from the folks we voted into office. Through my work at Clevco Construction Company, I find that the hardest part of my job is not selling and building, but the monotonous task of filing my taxes at the end of the year. It is certainly the most distasteful aspect of being a business owner.

Businesses throughout Texas need our tax code fixed as soon as possible. Republicans have the power to enact meaningful tax reform legislation that could help to empower small businesses so that they can hire more workers and improve their communities. We need a simpler code with fairer rates so our businesses can survive in the increasingly competitive modern economy.

I am encouraged by the plans put forth by the House GOP and the White House, which would go a long way to creating jobs and growing the economy. I urge every member of the Texas Congressional Delegation to work with the GOP leadership to come together and pass reform legislation this year.
