Liquor store clerk shoots alleged robbery suspect

Police in Beaumont are investigating a shooting related to a reported attempted robbery at the Gulf Liquor Store, 3020 Gulf Street in Beaumont, on Jan. 26, Officer Carol Riley stated in a news release. 

According to the news release, officers responded to the liquor store in reference to a robbery of the business at 6:12 p.m. The clerk told police dispatch he had shot the suspect. Upon arrival, officers located Arthur Thomas, a 35-year-old Silsbee resident, outside of the store with a gunshot wound in his front lower torso below his belt.

The clerk told officers that the suspect was in the store several times earlier in the day causing trouble and making threats. The clerk said Thomas entered the store at 6:11 p.m. and demanded money. The clerk shot the suspect, and he ran out of the store.

Thomas was transported to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening injuries. He was treated and released.

At the time he was taken into police custody, Thomas was also in possession of suspected PCP, Riley reported. Thomas was arrested for public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance and booked into Jefferson County Correctional Facility.

The robbery is still under investigation, and police expect robbery charges to be filed at a later date.
