Lamar University's Social Work Students Association gathered at the HEB on College Street on Jan. 31 to purchase hunger relief bags, Southeast Texas Food Bank executive director Dan Maher said in a release.

Annually, Lamar University's Social Work Students Association shows its support for hunger relief locally by participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring, Maher said. He explained that the Souper Bowl of Caring is a national event designed to use the backdrop of Super Bowl festivities as an occasion to encourage support for hunger relief efforts, especially through local food banks.

In Southeast Texas, funds raised through the Souper Bowl of Caring are donated by retailers to the Southeast Texas Food Bank. Last year, the Souper Bowl of Caring generated almost $30,000 in donations locally, according to Maher.
