Man commits suicide during traffic stop in Jefferson County

A man with out-of-state felony warrants reportedly committed suicide during a traffic stop in Jefferson County Nov. 17, reports Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) Deputy Marcus McLelllan.

According to a news release from McLellan, at just before 5 p.m. Thursday, a JCSO deputy stopped a vehicle traveling westbound on Interstate 10 at the 839-mile marker for a traffic violation. The deputy requested the driver exit the vehicle. While the driver was outside the vehicle, the deputy was attempting to identify him. At that time, reports JCSO, the driver ran back to his vehicle and retrieved a firearm. The driver then shot himself inside the vehicle in view of the deputy.

The driver was transported to St. Elizabeth hospital in Beaumont where he was pronounced dead.  The driver was a 25-year-old white male who was wanted out of New Castle, Pennsylvania on several felony charges. His name has not yet been released. 

No one else was injured.

The incident is remains under investigation at this time.
