Man found shot to death at crash scene

A 23 year old man from Beaumont was found shot to death at the scene of a traffic accident in west Jefferson County, Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Stephanie Davis said in a release.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to a one vehicle crash on Highway 90 just west of Meeker Road in Jefferson County at about 4 a.m. Oct 10, occurred just West of Meeker Road. 

Initial reports indicate that a Ford F-150 pickup truck was traveling westbound on Highway 90. For an unknown reason, the driver traveled off the roadway and struck several trees.

The driver, a 21-year-old Beaumont man who was not wearing a seatbelt, was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth hospital with serious injuries, . Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Capt. Crystal Holmes said that he is listed in critical condition in a release.

The passenger, Chase Taylor, 23, from Beaumont, was pronounced deceased at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound to the right side of his head, Holmes confirmed. A handgun was found on Taylor's lap inside the vehicle, according to JCSO. 

Judge Chesson pronounced Taylor deceased, and his body was transported to the morgue for autopsy. 

DPS and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office are in the preliminary stages of investigating the accident and the shooting.
