Man killed in Vidor home fire

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to 297 Pug Road in Vidor to assist the Orange County Emergency Services District #1 with a house fire Tuesday night, Dec. 6. Once deputies arrived on scene, they were alerted that one adult was possibly still inside the burning residence completely engulfed in flames.

When the fire was extinguished, the body of homeowner Howard Asa Baker, 49, was discovered.

Orange County Justice of the Peace Janice Menard responded and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. Baker was transported to the Jefferson County Morgue where an autopsy will be performed.

Arson investigators from Orange County Emergency Services District #1 were assisted by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and the Texas State Fire Marshalls Office in investigating what happened to cause the fire. According to information from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, investigators ruled the fire is accidental and determined the fire was started by a propane heater used to heat the home.
