Police are searching for a suspect who committed a “smash and grab” at a convenience store Aug. 12, reports the Beaumont Police Department. According to BPD and convenience store staff, the man got away with about $4,000 in Marlboro cigarettes.

“He only took the Marlboro Reds and Lights,” Market Basket Express employee Kirkland Gardner, who viewed video of the incident, told The Examiner. “He backed his truck right through the double doors and shattered the glass of the window above them. He knew exactly what he wanted. He had a trash bag and went for the cigarettes behind the counter immediately.”

Gardner said he has heard of “smash and grabs” like this one before in Houston media reports, but this is the first time he has heard of such an incident occurring in Beaumont. He said he also believes the suspect is the same man who attempted to smash through the glass doors with a rock July 26.

“He was wearing the same white hat in both videos,” said Gardner.

Beaumont Police Department Officer Tony Harding reports detectives are working hard to find the thief.

“It happened at about 2 a.m.,” said Harding. “The double glass doors were smashed in by a motor vehicle.”

Investigators have viewed the video and describe the suspect as a black male wearing a white cap in a maroon shirt and khaki pants. Officer Harding said the suspect was driving what appeared to be a dark gray, four-door Nissan Versa. Investigators were able to recover pieces of the bumper of the vehicle and broken pieces of lenses from the vehicle light covers at the scene of the crime.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the Marlboro bandit should contact Crime Stoppers at (409) 833-TIPS (8477).
