Monday delay expected from road closure

On Monday, March 12, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will close the eastbound traffic lanes on SH 73, near Wilber Road, to reconstruct a fatal crash that occurred on Friday, according to DPS’ Sergeant Stephanie Davis.

All eastbound traffic lanes will be closed for approximately three hours with crash reconstruction beginning at 1 p.m., she advised.

“Motorists are urged to find an alternate travel route,” according to Davis. “Expect delays.”

Early morning Friday, March 9, DPS reported a multiple vehicle crash on Highway 73, near Big Hill Road, in Jefferson County.

“Preliminary reports indicate that a 2008 Peterbuilt truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling eastbound on SH 73,” information released from DPS indicated of the incident. “The driver of the 18-wheeler slowed to make a right turn onto Wilbur Road when its trailer was impacted by a 2016 Chrysler passenger vehicle.

“The driver of the Chrysler, a 26-year-old male from Dayton, Texas, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Ray Chesson.”

The victim’s name had not been released pending notification of the deceased’s next of kin. The driver of the 18-wheeler, Jesus Chapa, 75, of Alvin, Texas, did not sustain any injuries in the crash.
